William McDowell Collection

William McDowell was born in New Zealand, the son of an engineer.  He began his association working with metal in his father’s workshop at home.

He trained as a jeweller from 1966, serving his apprenticeship at his grandfather’s manufacturing jewellery business.  During the following years he set up his own workshop while working part time as a badge maker and jeweller to learn enamelling and other aspects of the trade.

He began working full time in his own business in 1978 and the same year won the NZ Design section of the prestigious national competition, Jeweller of the Year.

His manufacture of custom made jewellery of traditional and modern design is a main part of his working week.  The other focus of his work is creating original hand made Art Jewellery pieces, each of which is a culmination of engineering, art and jewellery which he describes as “a form of still life painted with pliers”.
